Maija Haavisto
I am a journalist, medical writer, author, artist and photographer from Helsinki, Finland, currently residing in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I started writing for a living at the age of 16. For six years I used to work for a computer magazine and had two of my own columns. I have also been a regular contributor to an interior design magazine.
Currently I write e.g. for the music magazine Vertigo, for which I've interviewed such well-known bands as Anthrax and Front 242, a health/fitness magazine, a vegan magazine and a Finnish health portal. I am a columnist for the Finnish disability magazine Tukilinja. I also do freelance translation, SEO writing and (medical) copywriting on the side and run a vegan food blog called Vegventures. My debut novel Marian ilmestyskirja (Maria's Book of Revelations) was published by Muruja in October 2011.
I have had CFS/ME (chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis) since the year 2000, though with proper medical treatment I have managed to reverse the previously progressive course of my illness. I have written a book about CFS/ME/fibromyalgia treatments titled Reviving the Broken Marionette: Treatments for CFS/ME and Fibromyalgia, which features over 250 medications. The second Finnish edition of the book was released by the Finnish academic publisher Finn Lectura in May 2010. Finn Lectura also published my previous book Näin käytät Twitteriä (How to use Twitter) in 2009. My next medical textbook will be out in November 2011.
Currently I am working on a vegan food-related book to be out in 2012. I am also planning a new disability-themed novel.
My interests are varied including vegetarian food, literature, digital and traditional art, photography, indoor gardening, travelling, electronic music and many other things, but medicine is my #1 passion. I am particularly interested in neurology, pharmacology, psychiatry, immunology, oncology, endocrinology and nutritional science but also alternative medicine - from a critical perspective.
P.S. Don't forget to follow me on Twitter!
